Author, intellectual, and former professor at the EΛ.АΣ. for six consecutive years is the man who was arrested last Monday (5/8) as being responsible for causing four fires in Vari.
What is surprising is that the same man, along with another friend, had sent an email to the local municipality at the end of May complaining about the clearing of plots of land, expressing their fear that there was a fire risk.
The action of the arrested man was revealed after a thorough investigation by the Directorate for the Suppression of Arson Crimes (D.A.E.E.) of the PC, whose officials managed to put all the pieces of the puzzle together and finally reached the man’s identity.
As it follows from the report of protothema.gr, the countdown to his arrest began when the executives of the D.A.E.E. spotted a video from June 8 (that day two fires broke out in the area) in which a man, tall with a braid, is seen walking by the spot where one of the fires broke out, bending down, doing something with his hands (his movement has not been captured) and then, while walking away, a fire breaks out.
A photo of the incident was secured and presented by protothema.gr
This was the first clue. The second was images from another security camera showing the same man in different clothes and the same white shoes, attempting the next day (June 9) to light in the area by throwing a flaming rag or paper. His attempt did not bear fruit, however, the offender was not deterred as, as seen in the images, he walked for about 10 meters and then bent down and set the fire with a lighter. On leaving, he has even been captured standing short for a few seconds, turning around and looking at his work with satisfaction.
So with these snapshots in hand, the DACS officials were trying to reach the identity of the mysterious man with long hair. So during the investigation, a woman who lives in the area told investigators that the figure seen in the images resembled a man who resides in the area. Two other witnesses also said the same thing, that is, that the male figure in question resembles the arrested man. One of the two witnesses is a relative of the alleged perpetrator.
“He was the only one in the area with these features. Tall, with a braid, glasses, and the same sneakers,” said sources with knowledge of the case.
The next step was to form a case file and send the evidence to the Prosecutor’s Office where, after evaluation, it was decided to issue an arrest warrant.
The man was arrested however until this moment, he does not accept the charges claiming that he has nothing to do with causing the fires.
