Fire in Attica: 32 children transferred from the Penteli Protection Centre to Ilion

Fire victims are being hosted in Nea Makri and Keratea

Newsroom August 12 11:19

The Ministry of Social Cohesion and Family has been in immediate mobilization since early Sunday afternoon (11/08/2024) when the major fires broke out in Attica, to protect guests and workers in structures supervised by the Ministry and located in areas affected or threatened by the fires.

Specifically, as stated in an announcement:

“-In the early hours of Monday morning, following the relevant instructions from the Civil Protection, we were immediately mobilized, resulting in the rapid and safe removal of 32 young children and 10 employees from the Child Protection Unit of Penteli, which is a service of the Child Protection Center “The Mother”.

The children aged up to 5 years old, together with their caregivers, are now accommodated at the Child Protection Centre “The Mother” in Ilion.

-At the same time, there was preparedness and planning in case of emergency for the evacuation of the Chronic Diseases Treatment Centre in Melissia, where 57 patients are accommodated and 20 employees provide care.

-A special plan has been prepared for the camps of Nea Makri/Agios Andreas and Keratea.

-In Nea Makri, in cooperation with the Municipality, the houses are being prepared to accommodate either firefighters or residents of the area if and when the need arises.

-We also postponed for a few days the start of the next camping season for 300 people with disabilities, so that the situation in the area can be re-evaluated.

The children’s camp of Keratea is in operation and currently accommodates 240 children. We have ensured the possibility to accommodate our fellow citizens who may have to evacuate their homes.”
