A fire broke out early this morning on an open-type ferry boat in Spetses. The vessel in question is the Kapetan Stavros, which operates the local ferry line between Spetses and Kosta. The fire started on the bridge while the boat was docked at the old port.
A coast guard vessel and vehicle, along with a fire truck, rushed to the scene. The fire was extinguished by the ferry boat’s crew using onboard resources. According to information from the Coast Guard, there were no injuries and no marine pollution was reported.
The Coast Guard has prohibited the ferry from departing until it is inspected by the classification society overseeing it and deemed seaworthy. The vessel daily connects Argolis with Spetses, transporting passengers and vehicles. During this summer period, there is significant traffic to the cosmopolitan island of the Argolic Gulf.
According to the latest information, services will be provided by the “Spetses Express 1” until the vessel is replaced. However, cars cannot be transported. For the same reason, the island’s supply is hindered as trucks cannot pass from Kosta, resulting in products and items being transported by sea taxis.
At the same time, consultations are underway between the company and the Maritime Transport Directorate of the Ministry of Shipping to replace the vessel as quickly as possible with the Katerina Star, which belongs to the same company.
