The post of the Municipality of Glyfada

The young men who set the fire in Terpsithea of Glyfada were arrested.

The fire, which broke out shortly before 8 pm in a rough area behind the Terpsithea football stadium, was caused by arson. Two young men were seen “at work”, chased by residents, identified and arrested by the Glyfada Security Department. The fire was extinguished immediately.

Mayor of Glyfada George Papanikolaou made the following statements: “Fortunately everything is fine. We had a source of fire just before 8 pm today in Ano Glyfada, in Terpsithea, just behind the football stadium. At the point where the fire started, which is inaccessible and inaccessible by vehicles, our civil protection and our volunteers who were patrolling the area and the fire brigade who even operated with two helicopters arrived immediately and the fire was extinguished. The helicopters used the water from a tank we have installed in the area and so without any delay, they were able to operate most efficiently.

From the information we have available to us, today’s fire is the result of arson. A big thank you to our Fire Department, our civil defense and our volunteers, the volunteer groups of neighboring municipalities. We remain on constant alert and vigilance throughout the evening to ensure that there is not the slightest rekindling of the fire from the candles. We continue to remain vigilant for the remainder of the fire season.
We hope there will be no further incidents anywhere else during these critical hours so that firefighting forces remain focused in Northeast Attica.”

The fire broke out, specifically, at 7:50 p.m. on Monday, August 12, behind the Terpsithea football stadium, just 300 meters from residential properties. It was spotted from the first minute, by the patrols of the Civil Protection of the Municipality of Glyfada and the volunteer group O.AN.E.AN., which are continuous day and night.

By order of the Mayor of Glyfada George Papanikolaou, the mobilization was immediate. The Civil Protection teams of the Municipality of Glyfada, the volunteers of Glyfada and the neighboring municipalities, together with five water carriers, two helicopters that made more than 20 drops, as well as ground forces of the 8th Fire Station, entered the battle with the flames and extinguished the fire before it could spread, pumping water from the new helicopter tank that has been placed in Terpsithea.
Deputy Mayor of Cleaning and Recycling Spyros Dimou, Deputy Councillors Anni Kauka, George Tavernarakis, and Christos Michalakakos rushed to the scene, while the Municipal Police made traffic arrangements to facilitate the firefighters, Civil Protection officials, and Volunteers. Around 20:30 the fire was extinguished. Fire brigade forces and volunteers remained on the scene throughout the night for any reignitions.
