The 46-year-old driver, who on Wednesday morning drove his car into the area of Thermi in eastern Thessaloniki and seriously injured a couple walking with their two-year-old child, will be brought before the prosecutor in the coming hours in Thessaloniki.
The man, who was driving having consumed more than the permitted amount of alcohol, is accused of serial bodily harm, drunkenness and dangerous driving, charges that may change depending on the evidence added to the case file being formed on the case, the state of health of the injured and the prosecutor’s case against him.
The couple is fighting for their lives
Meanwhile, the couple, the 37-year-old man and his 34-year-old wife, who is in her fifth month of pregnancy, are still in a critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit of the Papageorgiou hospital in Thessaloniki, while their child is in the pediatric surgery clinic, out of danger.
According to reports, the couple, permanent residents of Belgium, were in Thessaloniki, probably on vacation.
The 46-year-old man spoke to his mother before and after the accident
The accident happened around 11am on Wednesday morning, on a road linking the Thessaloniki-Polygyros highway to Perea, near the premises of a private KTEO. The car, after hitting the family, knocked down a fence and came to a halt in an adjacent yard of a house with olive trees. The 46-year-old driver of the car was allegedly intoxicated and was arrested immediately after the serious accident and remains in custody on the order of the prosecutor.
The accused allegedly spoke with his mother on the phone a few hours before the incident and informed her that he was in a beach area. A short time later he called her again and told her that he had run over three people with his car.
