A massive rescue operation is underway by the fire department to save the trapped individuals – The rock fell due to a heavy downpour – Intense lightning activity in the area.

A tragedy occurred today in Samaria Gorge, with a woman losing her life after a rockfall caused by a strong rainstorm in the area.

According to flashnews.gr, the deceased was a hiker, a visitor to the gorge, who succumbed to hemorrhage.

Meanwhile, dozens of other hikers have become trapped inside the gorge, as the rockfall has blocked the paths. The incident took place near the exit of Samaria Gorge, towards Agia Roumeli.

Large forces from the Hellenic Fire Service’s Special Disaster Unit (EMAK) and the Mountain Rescue Unit (EMODE) from Chania, Rethymno, and Heraklion have rushed to the scene to rescue the trapped individuals.
