In the heart of the historic center, you can experience mornings, afternoons, and many evenings like a true tourist in your own city. The holiday feeling continues even in the early autumn chill, when the nights almost require a light jacket to protect you from the gentle cool breeze under the stars.
The rooftops of the city were, are, and will always remain one of our favorite stops for food, drinks, or coffee. These spots consistently attract locals and tourists alike and are always high on the lists of travel guides for a romantic dinner under the clear Athenian sky or for entertainment until the early morning hours.
At some of the most central and fascinating spots in the city, you’ll get to know the most open-hearted version of Athens by night. You’ll also have the opportunity to admire uninterrupted views of the ultimate symbol of the Greek capital—the Acropolis and its breathtaking Parthenon.
Whether you’re looking for a cozy spot for coffee with a view, a homemade breakfast with fresh ingredients, or an unforgettable meal that combines Greek tradition with European flair, the city’s beautiful, idyllic, and picturesque rooftops offer an escape dream for all seasons.
1. Kuzina
An iconic, much-discussed, and award-winning restaurant, Kuzina is located at one of the most charming spots in the historic center. Overlooking the pedestrian street of Adrianou and the stunning Temple of Hephaestus, Kuzina has been offering visitors a complete, unforgettable gastronomic experience for years.
The highlight is undoubtedly its stunning rooftop, which seems straight out of a movie scene, filled with elegant furniture that transforms this sophisticated restaurant—just a two-minute walk from the Thiseio metro station—into one of the most refined dining spots in Athens. The menu, signed by chef Aris Tsanaklidis, blends his rich global culinary influences with Greek tradition in a fusion that promises surprises and extraordinary flavors.
You can choose from the a la carte menu or indulge in the magic of the eight-course degustation menu, which offers a personal selection by the chef for the ultimate Kuzina experience. Highlights include the famous misoyaki black cod with miso-marinated eggplant, teriyaki sauce, and turnip cucumber, as well as the lamb rack with white bean stew, chard, Florina peppers, and Mavrodaphne sauce. For pasta lovers, the saffron risotto with gremolata and shrimp tartare is a dreamy option. And to top it off, a refreshing, deconstructed lemon tart is the perfect end to the meal.
For a truly romantic dining experience, the rooftop at Kuzina with its enchanting atmosphere and stunning view is a dream come true.
2. Retiré@Ergon
Foodies and lovers of fine fresh products have long favored Ergon. At the rooftop of this popular hotel, which honors exceptional food in all its forms, you’ll find a wonderful yet laid-back setting reminiscent of an urban escape. Pebbles reminiscent of the beach, atmospheric hanging lights, wicker chairs, and a charming food truck parked in one corner create a cozy environment at Retiré, the perfect place to enjoy incredible cocktails and drinks under the stars, with breathtaking views every time.
There are also several food options, including cheese and charcuterie boards, various versions of peinirli (a Greek pizza-like dish), and excellent burgers. One of the best features is that the cocktails, designed by The Clumsies team, are divided into two categories: classic on tap and signature cocktails.
3. Bios
One of the most beloved spots for “alternative” Athens, Bios combines great drinks and delicious cocktails with its distinctive artistic identity. It’s a popular concert venue in the center of Athens and also a place where you can occasionally catch some truly creative and interesting theatrical performances. The eclectic interior of Bios, with its iconic AEROFLOT neon sign above the bar, is one of the most recognizable in the urban heart of the city.
However, it’s no secret that, weather permitting, the rooftop at Bios offers some of the most magical nights of your life. With views of the Acropolis and the vibrant chaos of Piraeus Street below, you can enjoy signature and classic cocktails, as well as the famous “papoto,” a cocktail in the form of an ice pop—a cross between a popsicle and a drink. The Basil Cobbler with port, strawberry, lime, and basil is a standout and worth trying. The projector often displays beloved music videos, and for those feeling a bit hungry, there are always great options for quick bites, like juicy burgers and tasty finger food.
4. Couleur Locale
At one of the most unique and picturesque spots in central Athens, on the small Normanou Street surrounded by vintage shops and antique stores, you’ll find one of the most Instagrammable rooftops in the city. Couleur Locale is quieter in the mornings and early afternoons from Monday to Friday, but it truly comes alive after sunset. The energy picks up as the music gets louder and people gather around wooden tables and high stools. On weekends, the “party” starts early at this lively, youthful spot with its stunning views of the Parthenon, perfect for post-shopping coffee or early drinks accompanied by tasty snacks or larger, well-prepared dishes.
Couleur Locale often hosts DJ nights with international artists that keep the fun going until late, making this a hot spot for Athenian 20-somethings, offering panoramic views of Attica.
5. A for Athens
One of the most popular hotel choices in Athens, just steps from Monastiraki Square, A for Athens has impressed visitors since it first opened. Its minimalist design, proximity to all the key attractions, and, of course, its fantastic rooftop have made it a favorite. Breakfast is served early on the rooftop with views of the Acropolis and Parthenon, and the food experience continues throughout the day with excellent brunch options like specially prepared eggs, homemade pies, pizza, and burgers.
Brunch is served from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and it’s not just loved by visitors—Athenians also have A for Athens high on their list of favorite spots for coffee, drinks, and hearty, homemade food that makes us feel like tourists in our own city, as if we’re on vacation in Athens.
6. To Lokali
Without a doubt, one of the most photographed and beautiful courtyards in Psyrri is the garden at To Lokali, which draws regulars year-round. What many people don’t know is that this cool city spot also has a rooftop, which officially opened two summers ago. Here, you’ll feel like you’ve been “teleported” to an island, with colorful lights strung above your heads creating the most idyllic setting for unforgettable nights with friends. Plants fill every corner, a bar resembling a food truck sits at the back, and barrels serve as tables, all while you enjoy the incredible cocktails for which this Athens hangout is known, especially those based on tequila.
Just like in the garden at To Lokali, the rooftop offers a street food menu, along with some surprising traditional dishes, like fried okra that might make you see this childhood “difficult” food in a new light.
