Tragedy struck the Ampelokipoi neighborhood when an explosion erupted in a third-floor apartment on Arkadias Street around midday on Thursday.
The blast claimed one life and injured a woman, who was subsequently rescued from the debris. As dramatic images show, the apartment’s rear side was completely destroyed, and adjacent apartments also sustained substantial damage.
Upon hearing the explosion, neighbors immediately alerted authorities, and the Fire Department and Greek Police quickly responded. A crew of 23 firefighters with six vehicles, a specialized ladder truck, and a rescue dog team arrived to contain the situation.
The cause of the explosion remains unknown, and the apartment, severely damaged, awaits forensic investigation. Firefighters anticipate that the rescued woman’s testimony may shed light on the cause of the blast. Some local witnesses described hearing a loud noise and noted injuries to two women at the scene.
