Donald Trump’s victory in the American Election 2024 was heroic, with him accomplishing something no Republican has done in 20 years. He also won the popular vote by over 5 million votes over Kamala Harris. The last Republican to accomplish this was George W. Bush in 2004, over John Kerry. At the same time, Trump has managed to return the Senate to Republican control and looks set to win in all the so-called swing states.

George Eugenides’ commentary from Washington,
“Yesterday’s US election result is a sweeping victory for Donald Trump and at the same time a sweeping return to the center of the political scene with total control of the Senate and the House of Representatives. But at the same time, it is also a sweeping defeat for Democratic politics. Trump now has the leeway to do what he thinks needs to be done for the US by exploiting the silent “red river.”
On the other hand, Democrats see their policies on the economy, immigration, and entitlements suffering a dismal political defeat. Ms. Harris – who so far has not congratulated her political opponent on the victory – “managed” to do worse than Joe Biden in 2020. She did worse not only in the critical states she lost but also in states seen as Democratic strongholds where the party has always been strong. At the same time, he did worse even in social groups like Hispanics who were a privileged Democratic audience.
The Democratic Party should reflect overall on what is going wrong with its policies and record this dismal electoral defeat that puts Trump back in the spotlight.”
