A British MP was charged with assault today after he allegedly punched a passer-by, who he claims threatened him, after a night out on Friday.
Mike Amesbury was removed from the ruling Labour Party as he was recorded in CCTV and video footage punching a man and repeatedly hitting him after he collapsed to the ground.
“Following an assessment of the evidence provided by Cheshire Police, we are approving the charge of common assault against Mike Amesbury,” said Rosemary Ainsley, head of the prosecution’s Special Crimes Unit.
“The charge follows an alleged assault in Frontsham, Cheshire, on Saturday, October 26, 2024.”
After the incident, Amesbury, an MP elected in the constituency of Runcorn and Hellsbay in northwest England, said he felt threatened in the street after a night out with friends.
“I was called into court today to face a charge of common assault following an incident in Frohnsham last month, which I deeply regret,” Amesbury said in a statement today.
“I continue to cooperate with police and as the investigation is ongoing I cannot comment further.”
