Over 600 students from St Andrews Grammar, the only Greek Orthodox school in Western Australia, formed the Greek flag with their bodies as a show of support for the Greek tennis team, represented by Stefanos Tsitsipas and Maria Sakkari, ahead of the United Cup tournament to be held next month in Perth.
On Wednesday, November 6, students formed a “human Greek flag” on the occasion of the visit of the United Cup trophy to the school, which is “touring” Western Australia this month.
The United Cup will see 18 countries compete in a mixed-team tennis tournament, vying for a place in the final.
Greece’s team will again include Stefanos Tsitsipas, ranked No. 11 in the men’s world rankings, and Maria Sakkari, ranked No. 32 in the women’s rankings.
Greece will face Spain and Kazakhstan in the third group of the Perth draw, aiming to improve on their quarter-final performance from their previous participation in 2022/23.
“We are part of the wider Greek community in Western Australia and this is a great opportunity for our students to participate in a fun activity and express their support for Greece, school principal Craig Monaghan said in a press release sent to Neos Kosmos.
“They are looking forward to learning more about the trophy and the tournament. It is almost as impressive as Stephen and Maria’s visit to the school, so all the staff and students were quite excited,”he added.
Furthermore, he added that “this could help bring out the next generation of tennis stars, so it’s a great opportunity to get involved and expose the sport to more kids.”
The tournament is due to take place in Perth on December 27, with Greece playing against Spain on December 28.
