Orban at COP29: Green transition must include oil and nuclear energy security

We cannot impose unrealistic quotas or burdensome rules on farmers and companies, the Hungarian Prime Minister said at the UN session

Newsroom November 12 10:45

We should continue to use oil and gas, Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orban has called for from the podium at the United Nations climate summit being held in Azerbaijan.

As he added, “We must continue to promote the green transition while maintaining the use of natural gas, oil, and nuclear energy.”

He also said that “we cannot sacrifice our industry or agriculture in the process” and that “we cannot impose unrealistic quotas or burdensome rules on farmers and companies.”

However, he said Hungary intends to become “a major player in the development of electric vehicles and in electricity storage.”

His comments, as Politico points out, are in strong contrast to the European Union’s message that the COP29 being held in Azerbaijan must uphold last year’s global agreement to transition away from fossil fuels.

Hungary holds the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU this semester.
