The center of Athens resembles a “fortress” due to the festive events for the “51st Anniversary of the Polytechnic Uprising”. Meanwhile, the police have implemented a series of traffic regulations starting Friday, November 15, 2024, and continuing until Monday, November 18, 2024, throughout the city center.

According to a statement from the Hellenic Police, emergency traffic regulations will be in effect until Monday, November 18, 2024, in the following road network of the broader Athens city center:

• Ban on stopping and parking, as well as the disruption of vehicle traffic, will be gradually enforced depending on the traffic conditions, from 06:00 on Friday, November 15, 2024, to 06:00 on Monday, November 18, 2024, on the following streets:
• Stournari (between Exarchia Square and 3rd September Street).
• 28th October (Patission) (between Kodrigtonos and Eleftherios Venizelos Street and on both traffic directions, including its perpendiculars up to the first parallel street).

These traffic regulations will be enforced gradually and according to the traffic conditions.

Moreover, according to a decision from “Odos Symvionies SA”, there will be changes to the schedules and stops of public transport (Buses – Trolleybuses).

The Traffic Department of Attica has planned and will implement measures to facilitate traffic in the broader Athens city center area.

Drivers are advised to avoid driving and parking in areas where the events and marches will take place, around the U.S. Embassy, and in the broader city center area, until Sunday, November 17, 2024, for both their own convenience and to prevent additional traffic problems.

Measures for Polytechnic Anniversary – Athens “Fortress”

Increased police measures with 5,000 officers on the streets and ongoing drone and helicopter flights will be deployed by the Greek Police ahead of the Polytechnic anniversary celebrations.

Among the measures discussed during a meeting on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, at the General Police Directorate of Attica for the 51st anniversary of the Polytechnic Uprising, there will be enhanced surveillance from the Greek Police Operations Center for potential Israeli-related targets.

DIAS police officers will conduct continuous checks around the Polytechnic building. Meanwhile, DRASI police units will patrol the Exarchia area, and Traffic Police will implement the emergency and increased traffic measures, especially on Sunday.

Which metro stations will be closed on Sunday, November 17th:

Some metro stations in central Athens will be closed starting from 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 17, 2024, due to the Polytechnic Anniversary events.

According to information from STASY, following instructions from the police, the following metro stations will be closed at 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 17, 2024:

• Syntagma
• Monastiraki (Lines 1 & 3)
• Evangelismos
• Megaro Moussikis
• Omonia (Lines 1 & 2)
• Panepistimio

Trains will pass through these stations without stopping.
