Cillian Murphy saves historic Irish cinema with his wife

The couple purchases the Phoenix Cinema in Dingle, preserving its cultural legacy for future generations

Newsroom November 25 11:30

The Phoenix Cinema in Dingle, Ireland, with over a century of history, has been saved from permanent closure thanks to actor Cillian Murphy and his wife, Yvonne McGuinness. The iconic cinema, an integral part of the local cultural fabric, had been on the brink of closure since 2021 due to rising operational costs.

Murphy, known for his starring role in Peaky Blinders, expressed his personal connection to the theater:
“I spent summers watching movies there as a child. My father saw films in that same cinema before me, and now, as parents, we’ve experienced it with our own kids. It’s a vital part of Dingle’s identity.”

The couple purchased the cinema, ensuring its reopening and plans for future revitalization. “We want to reopen its doors, expand its potential, and restore its role in Dingle’s cultural community,” McGuinness stated.

The Phoenix Cinema was Dingle’s sole movie theater, amplifying the significance of this rescue effort. The reopening is expected next year, breathing new life into a cherished institution and preserving its legacy for future generations.

Meanwhile, Murphy continues his Hollywood journey, reprising his role as Tommy Shelby in a Peaky Blinders film collaboration with series creator Steven Knight.
