Hidden gem: The stunning Falakro Mountain and its surrounding natural beauty

Discover the natural wonders, vibrant villages, and rich traditions of Falakro Mountain, one of Greece's most enchanting destinations

Newsroom November 25 10:00

Falakro Mountain, one of Greece’s most breathtaking peaks, rises to an elevation of 2,232 meters. Nestled within its slopes are vibrant villages, abandoned settlements, impressive quarries, alpine meadows filled with wild orchids, and lush forests rich with pines, oaks, beeches, and chestnut trees. The mountain is also home to rare and endangered butterfly species and free-roaming wild horses.

Exploring the Villages

Volakas Village
Set at 830 meters on the slopes of Falakro, Volakas is a quintessential mountain village and an ideal base for exploring the area. Unlike the polished charm of villages like Papingo, Volakas offers an authentic rural charm with traditional stone houses, farm animals roaming freely, and a serene town square. Highlights include:

  • Prophet Elias Church (1841): A three-aisled basilica with a spiritual ambiance.
  • Local Customs: Experience the “Arapides” tradition during Epiphany, with men donning costumes that harken to ancient pagan rituals.

From Volakas, you can easily access Falakro Ski Resort, just 15 kilometers away, or explore the nearby village of Potamoi, 17 kilometers to the north, known for its views of the snow-capped Falakro summit and the Nestos River.

Cultural and Natural Highlights

  • Saint Raphael Chapel (Potamoi): A serene spot surrounded by sycamores and flowing waters, perfect for a peaceful retreat.
  • Malousta Waterfall: Accessible through a forest trail, though best explored with a local guide due to its remote location.
  • Pagoneri Village: A traditional settlement with Ottoman-era architecture and a small but fascinating folklore museum.

Activities for Nature Enthusiasts

Granitis Village
Located at 760 meters, Granitis is renowned for its hiking trails, including a 30-kilometer network of marked paths. It also hosts the annual Granitis Trail, featuring routes for all skill levels.

Lisse Fortress (Ochyro Village): A historic underground bunker and part of the Metaxas Line, offering a glimpse into Greece’s military past.

Lake Lefkogion: A scenic artificial lake formed by the Mylorema and Kryoneri streams, ideal for walking or cycling along its 14-kilometer perimeter.

Dining and Accommodation

  • Dining: From local tavernas in Volakas like Mylos and Bachari to lakeside eateries like Sofia’s Tavern in Potamoi, the region offers hearty meals featuring grilled meats and fresh produce.
  • Stay: Options range from cozy lodges like Granitis Lodge to charming guesthouses like Petalo Resort near Volakas.
