Miley Cyrus denies copying Bruno Mars’ song, files to dismiss copyright lawsuit

What the singer's legal team says

Newsroom November 26 11:30

Miley Cyrus firmly denies allegations that her hit song “Flowers” plagiarized elements from Bruno Mars’ “When I Was Your Man.”

According to documents obtained by The Post, the 32-year-old singer’s legal team filed a motion on November 20 to dismiss the copyright infringement lawsuit brought against Cyrus and her collaborators by Tempo Music Investments.

Tempo Music, which acquired partial rights to “When I Was Your Man” in 2020 from co-writer Philip Lawrence, claims the two songs share similarities. However, Bruno Mars and the other co-writers—Ari Levine and Andrew Wyatt—are not part of the lawsuit.

In the filing, Cyrus’s lawyers categorically deny any copying, arguing that the alleged similarities are coincidental and consist of “unprotected ideas and basic musical elements.”

Cyrus co-wrote “Flowers” with Gregory Hein and Michael Pollack. Her legal team also contends that Tempo Music lacks the legal standing to sue for copyright infringement since it only owns part of the song’s rights.

Fans can compare both tracks: “Flowers” and “When I Was Your Man.”
