Weather: Rain, thunderstorms, and snow expected – Which areas will be affected

Strong northerly winds bring a sharp temperature drop

The weather is expected to worsen starting Friday, according to meteorologists.

Thodoros Kolydas, Director of the National Weather Service, forecasts cold weather and snowfall in the central and northern regions of Greece. This will be accompanied by a significant drop in temperature from Sunday, December 1. Meteorologists Clearchos Marousakis, Giorgos Tsatrafillas, Tasos Arniakos, and Sakis Arnaoutoglou provide additional insights:

  • Kolydas anticipates showers and thunderstorms starting Friday, intensifying over the weekend with locally heavy rainfall.

  • Arniakos predicts snow on Saturday night and Sunday in central and northern mountains, Euboea, the Peloponnese, and semi-mountainous regions of Pindos and Macedonia.
  • Arnaoutoglou expects snowfall as low as 1,000m in altitude, especially in Western Macedonia and northern areas, alongside widespread heavy rain.

  • Clear skies dominate, with frost in northern regions. Temperatures range from -2°C in the north to 20°C in southern areas like Crete. Winds remain light across the country.

Weekly Forecast:

  • Thursday (November 28): Mostly clear skies, with some clouds in the west and north. Temperatures will remain steady.
  • Friday (November 29): Rain and thunderstorms will develop in western regions, spreading to the north and eastern Aegean by evening. Winds will intensify.
  • Saturday (November 30): Widespread showers and thunderstorms, with snow in central and northern mountainous areas. Strong winds from the north are expected.
  • Sunday (December 1): Heavy rain and snow across central and northern Greece, including Euboea and the Peloponnese. The phenomena will gradually weaken in the west but may intensify in the north and eastern Aegean.

The country is bracing for colder temperatures, heavy rainfall, and snowfall in higher altitudes, marking the arrival of severe winter conditions.
