First win for Panathinaikos: 1-0 triumph over HJK Helsinki in a match filled with missed opportunities

Panathinaikos edges past HJK Helsinki in a narrow victory, rekindling knockout stage hopes

Newsroom November 28 10:42

Panathinaikos celebrated its first victory in the League Phase of the UEFA Conference League, defeating Finnish side HJK Helsinki 1-0 at the Olympic Stadium of Athens during the 4th matchday. This crucial win puts the Greens back on track for advancing to the knockout stage.

The game’s lone goal came in the 33rd minute through an own goal by Toivio. Panathinaikos showcased an impressive performance, particularly in the first half, but wasted numerous chances. Despite this, HJK stayed in the game until the end, thanks to remarkable saves from their goalkeeper, Timen Nienhuis.

Match Overview

Panathinaikos entered the game with a high tempo, aiming for an early goal. Within the first 30 minutes, they created multiple significant opportunities, spearheaded by Facundo Pellistri. However, they were repeatedly denied by an outstanding Timen Nienhuis, who delivered a series of crucial saves.

  • 2nd minute: Nienhuis saved Pellistri’s diagonal shot.
  • 6th minute: Another attempt from Pellistri, following a cross by Vagiannidis, was deflected for a corner.
  • 15th minute: Pellistri broke through the defense but was again thwarted by Nienhuis.
  • 28th minute: Nienhuis made his most impressive save yet, stopping Pellistri’s effort after a superb setup by Arao and Bakasetas.

Breakthrough at 33’: The long-awaited goal came after a set-piece by Bakasetas. In a prolonged attacking phase, Pellistri found Ingersson, whose shot deflected off Toivio into the net, giving Panathinaikos the lead at 1-0.

HJK’s first significant attempt came at the 38th minute when Kokçu tested goalkeeper Lodygin, but the latter comfortably saved the effort.

Second Half Highlights

Panathinaikos started the second half more cautiously, allowing HJK to push forward.

  • 52nd minute: Möller’s effort went over the crossbar.
  • 54th minute: Nienhuis made another key save on Mladenović’s cross-shot.
  • 55th minute: Nienhuis again denied Geremeyev’s attempt.

Controversial Decision:
At the 82nd minute, Čerin’s shot was cleared off the line by Foster. Panathinaikos claimed the ball had crossed the goal line, but referee Donatas Rumšas, with assistance from VAR, allowed play to continue.

Panathinaikos nearly doubled their lead a minute later, but Nienhuis stopped Geremeyev’s one-on-one chance. HJK came close to equalizing in added time (90’+1’) with Meriluoto’s clever backheel attempt, which narrowly missed.
