The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) has inaugurated its new, modern facilities in Goudi, located at the very “heart” of the Health Sciences School. These two new buildings will house the educational and research infrastructure of the Medical School, the Department of Nursing, and the English-language undergraduate program of the Medical School, Medical Degree.
The inauguration ceremony took place on Thursday, November 28, 2024. The event was opened with a speech by NKUA’s Rector, Professor Gerasimos Siasos. Greetings followed from the Minister of Health, Adonis Georgiadis; the Dean of the Health Sciences School, Professor Pagona Lagiou; the President of the Medical School, Professor Nikolaos Arkadopoulos; the President of the Department of Nursing, Professor Pavlos Myriantheas; and the Chair of the Technical Council of NKUA, Professor Ioannis Tingelis.
Attendees included, among others, the Vice President of NKUA’s Governing Council, Professor Nikos Thomaidis; Council member Professor Spyros Vlachopoulos; Vice Rectors Professors Efstathios Efstathopoulos and Christos Karagiannis; Vice President of the Medical School, Professor K. Tsioufis; Vice President of the Nursing Department, Professor D. Kaitelidou; NKUA Executive Director Dr. Eleni N. Vassilopoulou; along with numerous faculty members, students from the Medical School, the English-language undergraduate program, and the Nursing Department.
The new buildings are located between Mikras Asias and Papadiamantopoulou streets. Each building consists of a basement, ground floor, and first floor, covering an area of 1,800 square meters. Combined, the two buildings span a total of 3,600 square meters. The administration’s goal is to construct an additional building based on these two, with a total area of 21,000 square meters. This future building will have nine floors and five basements, and the infrastructure has already been designed!
The two new buildings are fully operational and equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to support offices, laboratories, classrooms, and lecture halls. Specifically, necessary works were carried out to ensure the functional use of the two buildings and their surrounding areas. These works included: installation of a central air-conditioning system, development of public reception areas, creation of modern classrooms, offices, meeting and teaching spaces, artistic curation of common areas with the placement of artworks, landscaping of exterior spaces, installation of an automated parking entrance system, and beautification of both the outdoor and indoor spaces with plants, among other essential tasks.
