EuroBasket 2029: Eight countries, including Greece, submit bids for co-hosting

Greece joins Germany, Estonia, Spain, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Slovenia, and Finland in the race to co-host the prestigious tournament – FIBA Europe to announce the four selected countries in May 2025

Newsroom December 4 06:15

Eight countries, including Greece, are competing for the co-hosting rights of EuroBasket 2029. The bidding process has been finalized, with the European Basketball Federation (FIBA Europe) set to decide in May 2025 which four countries will co-host the men’s European Basketball Championship.

The practice of co-hosting EuroBasket began in 2015 and continues to this day.

In addition to Greece’s official bid, submitted on November 29, 2024, bids have also been placed by Germany, Estonia, Spain, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Slovenia, and Finland.

Historical Context

Five of these countries have seen their men’s national basketball teams win the EuroBasket championship. Greece has won the title twice, in 1987 at the Peace and Friendship Stadium in Athens and in 2005 in Belgrade. The other four champion countries are Germany, Spain, Lithuania, and Slovenia. Of these, Greece and Germany are the only nations to have claimed the title on home soil, with Germany achieving this feat in 1993.

Six of the eight contenders have previously hosted the EuroBasket tournament, including Greece.

Notably, Estonia and the Netherlands are the only two countries among the eight that have never reached the EuroBasket final phase.

Finland’s Unique Aspiration

Finland hopes to become the first country to host back-to-back EuroBasket tournaments, as it is one of the four co-hosts of EuroBasket 2025.

The EuroBasket 2025 men’s championship will be co-hosted by Cyprus, Latvia, Poland, and Finland, taking place from August 27 to September 14, 2025. The European champion will be crowned in Riga, Latvia.

Last week, FIBA Europe announced the four countries that will co-host the group phase of the Women’s EuroBasket 2027: Belgium, Lithuania, Sweden, and Finland.
