Meta, owned by Mark Zuckerberg, donated $1 million to a fund supporting events for Donald Trump’s inauguration.

According to the Financial Times, this marks the first time Zuckerberg has made such a donation. In the past, Donald Trump had accused the company’s platforms of censoring right-wing voices and even threatened Zuckerberg with imprisonment.

Last week, Meta’s head of global affairs, Nick Clegg, stated that the company “may have overdone it” when it came to content moderation, particularly during the pandemic. Clegg also mentioned that Zuckerberg wants to play “an active role in the discussions every government needs to have” about maintaining America’s leadership in the tech sector, particularly in areas like artificial intelligence.

Earlier this year, Zuckerberg expressed his desire for Meta to remain politically “neutral,” and the company has since reduced the visibility of political content across all its apps. However, in the months leading up to the elections, Zuckerberg referred to Trump as “a tough nut to crack” in his handling of an assassination attempt and wrote a letter to the House Judiciary Committee accusing the Biden administration of repeatedly pressuring his company to “censor” content during the pandemic.

It is also worth noting that Zuckerberg recently dined with Trump at the president-elect’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
