Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis began his visit to Crete today at the fishing harbor in Skaleta, Rethymno, which will accommodate up to 70 fishing vessels. The Prime Minister expressed his satisfaction with the overperformance of the economy, emphasizing that these funds are being reinvested in projects and initiatives with a social impact.

The Prime Minister was briefed by the responsible authorities on the progress of the project, with discussions also covering the next phases required for its completion.

In a conversation with the Governor of Crete, Stavros Arnaoutakis, the Prime Minister remarked, “We made two revisions to the 2024 budget from the overperformance of revenues and the fight against tax evasion to support public investments. A portion of these funds was allocated to regional budgets.”

“The economy is overperforming; we are pleased, and these funds are being reinvested in projects and actions with a social footprint,” added the Prime Minister.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis was welcomed by the Governor of Crete, Stavros Arnaoutakis; the Deputy Governor of Rethymno, Maria Lioni; and the Mayor of Rethymno, Giorgis Marinakis.

The Prime Minister then visited the Achilleion Hotel, where he met with the President of the Hotel Owners Association, Manolis Tsakalakis, members of the Board of Directors, and the President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Giorgos Giakoumakis. Upon his arrival, he was welcomed with a traditional treat.

With his visit to Crete, focusing on Rethymno and Heraklion, the Prime Minister continues his strategy of engaging with local development plans across Greece. Kyriakos Mitsotakis aims to spend more time outside the Maximos Mansion, emphasizing his belief that citizens throughout the country should feel equally included in the nation’s development progress.

Accompanying the Prime Minister in Crete is a large government delegation, including ministers, deputy ministers, and general secretaries. Notably, just a few days ago, New Democracy managed to win all four chambers of commerce in Crete, a rare achievement for the island.

Mr. Mitsotakis will participate in the presentation of the local development plan, which encompasses several critical projects for the broader region. This initiative aligns with Maximos Mansion’s broader strategy to implement interventions worth hundreds of millions of euros nationwide. Additionally, a contract for the water treatment facility at the Amari Dam will be signed.

Following his engagements in Rethymno, Mr. Mitsotakis will travel to Heraklion. At 5:00 PM, at the Region of Crete offices, the contract for the restoration of Agios Minas and the new Archaeological Museum of Archanes will be signed. Subsequently, he will inaugurate the new archaeological exhibition at the Heraklion Archaeological Museum.
