The municipalities of Thessaloniki prefecture are on standby for the potential snowfall, which could even occur within the city, this coming Sunday, according to the latest forecasts from the National Meteorological Service.
Authorities are ready and have taken all necessary precautions, preparing bags of salt and “warming up” their snowplows.
“We are fully prepared and monitoring the forecasts,” stated Ignatios Kaitezidis, mayor of Pylaia–Chortiatis and president of the Regional Association of Municipalities of Central Macedonia, speaking to the Athens–Macedonian News Agency (AMNA).
With 21 snowplows and a sufficient stock of 2,000 tons of salt, the municipality is on alert for any eventuality, as Chortiatis is the first area in the city to “turn white.” If the forecasts are confirmed, a text message (SMS) will be sent to residents, informing them about safety measures and the municipal spaces that will remain open to serve the public as part of the state of readiness.
As for the Municipality of Thessaloniki, the Deputy Mayor of Sanitation, Recycling, and Civil Protection, Giorgos Dimarelos, told AMNA that the necessary preparations have been made, and now the updated weather forecast bulletin is being awaited.
The central municipality’s equipment is ready, along with the salt for any scenario. Should it become necessary, based on how the weather develops, adjustments will be made to the waste collection schedules for both the green and blue bins.
