According to data released by ELSTAT for December 2024, annual inflation, compared to December 2023, in the “Food and non-alcoholic beverages” category was -0.3%, and in the “Food” category was -0.5%, indicating price decreases in a number of basic food products.
The reductions come after successive inspections by the relevant departments of the Ministry of Development to tackle the phenomena of unfair profiteering in Greek and multinational companies, with high fines imposed. Competent sources estimate that these controls have led to substantial market compliance and containment of price increases.
At the same time, according to ELSTAT, significant reductions are also observed in the category “Cleaning and maintenance products” (-7.9%). It is underlined that especially for the category of cleaning products, in 2024, the government has taken measures to limit the practices of discounts, credits, and other benefits between suppliers and supermarkets, in order to pass the discounts directly to the shelf in favor of consumers.
