Milos: Construction halted for villas with pools in Sarakiniko, approved next to the “monstrosity” hotel

The Ministry of Environment has ordered a review of the building permit by the Independent Authority for Transparency

Newsroom February 7 12:40

As announced, the Ministry of Environment has decided to freeze construction until the legality of this permit is verified.

At the same time, following the same course of action as with the hotel exposed by protothema.gr, the Ministry has ordered the Independent Authority for Transparency to review the building permit.

What protothema.gr previously reported

Before the dust had even settled from protothema.gr’s revelation about the five-star hotel under construction in Sarakiniko, Milos, another building permit has come to light—this time for yet another complex in this unique and significant landmark, right next to it.

The permit, which was issued last Sunday (!), authorizes the construction of residences with pools on an adjacent plot to the “monstrosity” hotel, which had already sparked government intervention, leading to a complete halt of all construction work.

The building permit, issued on February 2—on a Sunday—mentions “three residences with swimming pools.” According to the permit, the three structures will cover a total volume of 909.85 square meters (above-ground building volume), with a footprint of 207.9 square meters and a total building area of 195.09 square meters. The project also includes nine parking spaces on a plot of 5,320.24 square meters.

As seen in protothema.gr’s video and aerial photos, these residences are planned for construction right next to the hotel that was being built by Unique Development but was halted by the Ministry of Environment after the public outcry caused by protothema.gr’s report.

The project had received preliminary approval for a building permit as early as August 2024, and the permit itself was issued just last Sunday. How did this happen on a non-working day? The same way the permit for the neighboring hotel was issued—through an electronic process that, according to legislation, can be completed by an engineer via a fast-track procedure.

In this particular case, however, construction has not yet begun. Meanwhile, on the adjacent plot, excavation machinery has already prepared the ground for foundation work…
