Sweden: Government seeks to restrict access to semi-automatic weapons after school massacre

The massacre at an education center in Örebro, central Sweden, left ten dead on Tuesday afternoon

Newsroom February 7 02:32

The Swedish government, backed by the far-right Sweden Democrats (SD) party, announced today that it is working on a bill to restrict access to semi-automatic weapons in response to the worst mass killing in the Scandinavian country’s history.

“There are certain types of weapons so dangerous that they should not be allowed for non-military purposes except in exceptional cases. The AR-15 is one example, as it accommodates large military-style magazines and can cause severe damage in a short time,” the government stated in an announcement.

The massacre in Örebro (central Sweden) resulted in ten deaths, including several foreigners, on Tuesday at an adult education center.

According to the police, three weapons were found next to the attacker, who, according to Swedish media, was 35-year-old Rikard Andersson.

“These are long-barreled weapons, meaning rifles,” a police spokesperson clarified yesterday, Thursday, without specifying the exact types of firearms. Investigators revealed that the attacker was licensed to own four hunting rifles.

“The horrific attack in Örebro brings several key questions about gun legislation back to the table,” the government stated on its website.

The criteria for assessing an individual’s ability to own such automatic weapons will also be clarified.

“Many of the factors currently considered” in this assessment “are not sufficiently clear in the firearm regulations,” the Ministry of Justice specified.

The government coalition has also tasked the police and social services with strengthening their cooperation to report individuals who are medically unfit to possess firearms.

Firearms legislation must strike a balance “between society’s interest in preventing crimes” and “the right of individuals and organizations to own weapons in justified cases,” the government explained.
