SYRIZA wants a Motion of no confidence in Parliament on Friday

‘It is not possible for the entire society to be discussing and mobilizing this week about the Tempi case, and for the Parliament to bypass the issue as if nothing is happening,’ commented a top source from SYRIZA to protothema.gr

Newsroom February 24 10:12

Syriza is seeking to tune into the social climate next Friday, on the anniversary of the tragic Tempi accident, and its leadership team is intensifying the proceedings from today, culminating in the filing of a proposal for motion of no-confidence against the government.

Already, the issue is expected to be raised at today’s meeting of the presidium of the Parliamentary Group of SYRIZA, as all the while the leading members of Koumoundourou have been sending out a clear message in all tones that the motion of no-confidence must be submitted immediately.

“It is not possible for the entire society to be discussing and mobilizing this week about the Tempi case, and for the Parliament to bypass the issue as if nothing is happening,” commented a top source from SYRIZA to protothema.gr a leading source of SYRIZA and while the “road map” to the motion of no-confidence is expected to occupy from today the top executives of the party.

The tone, moreover, was set yesterday from Ioannina by SYRIZA president Socrates Famellos, stating that “if this government cannot meet society’s demand for Justice and Transparency, then it must fall as soon as possible.”

“On Friday, Greek society will be mobilized”

“And because on Friday Greek society will be mobilized and will demand the same things that the progressive parties are saying, it is the best time for a motion of no-confidence against Mr Mitsotakis to be tabled and debated in the Greek Parliament. And we call on the progressive parties to do it together,” concluded Mr. Famellos, although the achievement of this political goal requires the signatures of the PASOK MPs, given that 50 signatures are required for the submission of the relevant petition.

At a time when SYRIZA has almost gone into political isolation, following the filing of a request for the establishment of a preliminary investigation committee by PASOK MPs alone, and with the transfer of Rania Thraskia to Charilaou Trikoupis.

The determination of the members of SYRIZA to push towards the immediate filing of a motion of no-confidence is reinforced by the attitude of MP for Chania, Pavlos Polakis, who appears in full harmony with the positions of Socrates Famellos. “Since when do questions constitute an accusation? Did SYRIZA call Mr Mitsotakis a murderer and I don’t know it?” he asked, backing Mr Famellos in his clash with Supreme Court prosecutor Georgia Adilini, while “the questions we raised concern exclusively what both the mother and the uncle of Vassilis Kalogeros claim,” he added, in an interview with Documento.

With an eye on…Germany

However, the social dimensions that the Tempi case has taken on, combined with the size of the mobilization outside and inside Greece, leave SYRIZA executives optimistic that they will eventually manage to broadcast on the same frequency as PASOK, namely that of immediately filing a motion of no-confidence against the ND government.

For the more optimistic in Koumoundourou, the result of yesterday’s German elections is expected to have a significant impact on PASOK’s political choices in the future, as the Social Democrats were defeated by a ruling party, unlike the Left Party, which held on to single digits when most analysts were predicting its electoral crush.

Zachariadis united Douca, SYRIZA and New Left

Moreover, SYRIZA’s suggestion to the other progressive parties that the motion of censure be tabled later this week, to be debated while rallies are underway across the country on Friday, is seen as finding Koumoundourou and Charilaou Trikoupis at a moment of partial de-escalation of tensions between them, if not a first approach.

At least this was the message that all those present at yesterday’s cutting of the new year’s cake of the municipal party in the municipality of Athens “Open City” attempted to convey. Hosted by the head of the combination and prominent of progressive partnerships, Kosta Zachariadis present at yesterday’s event was the Mayor of Athens, Charis Doukas, who stressed the constructive cooperation with Mr. Zachariadis in the municipality of the capital, the secretary of SYRIZA, Rania Svigou, the secretary of the New Left, Gavriel Sakellaridis, the MP for Athens, Elena Akrita, as well as the MPs of the New Left, Nassos Iliopoulos and Dmitris Tzanakopoulos.

Among the “green” presences are also the president of the city council, Manolis Velegrakis and the president of the Youth and Sports Organization of the municipality of Athens, Eleni Zontirou. From Koumoundourou, Mariliza Xenogiannakopoulou, member of the Political Secretariat of SYRIZA PS, as well as Gregory Theodorakis and Stergios Kalpakis, members of the Central Committee of Koumoundourou, were also present.
