The US President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, two White House officials told CNN, as part of the trade “war” that has erupted between the U.S. and Canada in recent hours.
The officials did not give details of what the two leaders said in their communication and are now awaiting an official update from the White House.
It will be recalled that the US tariffs, amounting to 25%, on imported products from Mexico and Canada came into force yesterday by Trump’s decision.
The tariffs were imposed after the US president claimed that the US’s top trading partners were not doing enough to stop the import of fentanyl and other drugs into his country.
Canada immediately announced that it would impose similar tariffs, worth tens of billions of dollars, on US-imported goods, prompting Trump to threaten to escalate the tariffs.
