Former Bank of England governor Mark Carney is Canada‘s new prime minister after winning the Liberal Party leadership race in a sweeping victory and will succeed Justin Trudeau in both the party’s leadership and the country’s government.

Carney, who was also head of Canada’s central bank, beat his main rival, former finance minister Christia Freeland.

The new prime minister will have to negotiate with US President Donald Trump as he threatens to impose additional tariffs on Canada and may soon face opposition Conservatives in a general election.

Trudeau announced in January that he was stepping down as prime minister after more than nine years in power as his approval ratings plunged, forcing his party to quickly set up party polls to replace him.

Former central banker Mark Carney had the lead from the start, garnering the most support from party members and the most money among the four Liberal candidates.

In the months before Trideau announced he was stepping down, the Liberals were frustrated with the prime minister.

The polls were dismal, Canadians were unhappy with the economy and the direction of the country, and more and more Liberal MPs were openly calling on him to leave.
