Wave of ND MPs support pay increase for police force, firefighters, and coast guard

What Pleyris, Plakiotakis, and Markopoulos wrote – Dimitris Avramopoulos was the first to raise the issue

Newsroom March 30 03:43

A growing movement within the New Democracy parliamentary group is advocating for salary increases for police officers, firefighters, and coast guard personnel, following public calls for such raises by Ministers Vasilis Kikilias and Adonis Georgiadis.

ND’s parliamentary representative, Thanos Plevris, stated in a post on X that while the salary increases for Armed Forces personnel were “necessary and fair,” he also considered the request for equal treatment for Greek Police (ELAS), the Fire Service, and the Coast Guard to be “reasonable.”

Similarly, Giannis Plakiotakis, First Vice President of Parliament and former Minister of Shipping, wrote in his own post:
“Salary increases should be extended to all uniformed personnel.”

“The raises for Armed Forces personnel were necessary, but they should also be extended to all uniformed officials—men and women of the Coast Guard, Fire Service, and Greek Police. I am confident that the Prime Minister will do what is right and just for all those who wear the national emblem.”

Dimitris Markopoulos, an ND MP, described including the security forces in the salary raises as a “matter of honor” for the government.

The first political figure to raise the issue was Dimitris Avramopoulos, a former minister and ND MP, who acknowledged that while the salary increases for the Armed Forces were “absolutely fair,” they should also apply to police officers, firefighters, and coast guard personnel.

“The pay raise for Armed Forces personnel is absolutely justified. The same must apply to the uniformed personnel of the Greek Police, Coast Guard, and Fire Service. Their services are vital to public safety, and the significant responsibilities they bear should be reflected in their salaries,” Avramopoulos stated on Saturday.
