Moments of terror unfolded on Thursday afternoon at “Alexandra” Hospital during a surgery for a patient. According to reports, the 60-year-old woman, who was undergoing surgery for cancer, caught fire, resulting in second-degree burns on parts of her body.
Sources indicate that the fire was likely caused by the diathermy system, which is used for hemostasis and is placed under the patient during the procedure.
Doctors and nurses in the operating room were horrified, but managed to extinguish the flames on the 60-year-old’s body within seconds using whatever they could find nearby.
The hospital administration is now investigating the causes of the incident and has ordered an urgent inquiry. The investigation will determine if the issue was related to the diathermy system or if the fire resulted from human error.
Adonis Georgiadis also addressed the issue, committing to ensuring the incident is resolved and that those responsible will face consequences.
“For the unacceptable accident involving the patient who suffered burns at “Alexandra” Hospital, I have ordered the immediate conduct of an administrative investigation, with the presence of a special expert. I wish the patient a speedy recovery, I apologize to her, and I pledge that this incident will be clarified and that the responsible party will be punished,” said the Minister of Health.
