Greenland: Telecommunications in the country affected by the blackout in Spain

Affected areas included some remote settlements, due to a satellite in Maspalomas

Newsroom April 29 11:35

Remote areas of Greenland lost access to essential satellite services, including internet and telephone communications, the Arctic island’s telecommunications group announced late Monday evening, adding that it will investigate whether this is linked to the mass blackout in Spain.

Greenland’s telecommunications company, Tussass, stated in a release that it lost connection to satellite equipment located in Spain, which is responsible for providing phone, internet, and broadcasting services.

“At the moment, there is no contact with our equipment in Maspalomas, Spain, on which we heavily rely to supply services to our customers in the satellite area,” Tussass said in its statement.

The affected areas were some remote settlements. It is still unclear how many people were impacted.

Late Monday night, power began to be restored in parts of the Iberian Peninsula following a blackout that affected much of Spain and Portugal.
