Weather: Temperatures reached 36°C today – showers and temperature drop expected Saturday

Particularly high temperatures were recorded again in Crete on Friday (5/9). According to the network of automatic weather stations of the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr, the highest temperature was recorded in Malia, Heraklion (36.1°C), followed by Falassarna, Chania; Sisi, Lasithi; Agioi Pantes, Chania; and Heraklion / ELMEPA (35.8°C).

The map below shows the distribution of maximum temperatures across the country. As indicated by the other data presented, the temperature exceeded 25°C in 356 out of 534 currently active stations (approx. 67%), reached 30°C in 82 stations (approx. 15%), and surpassed 35°C in 6 stations.

Weather: Temperatures hit 36°C today – Showers and temperature decrease expected Saturday

However, the weather will change across the country, as from Saturday a wave of instability is forecasted, accompanied by a drop in temperature and rainfall, mainly in central and northern regions.

Detailed forecast for Saturday according to EMY (Hellenic National Meteorological Service):

In Macedonia and Thrace, expect partly increased clouds with local showers and scattered thunderstorms. These phenomena may be locally intense until noon in the eastern parts. In the northern Aegean, Cyclades, Crete, and Dodecanese, expect a few clouds temporarily increased in the morning with local showers.

In the rest of the country, the weather will initially be clear, but from midday, clouds will develop in the mainland, especially in Thessaly, Euboea, eastern Central Greece, and eastern Peloponnese, with local showers or thunderstorms. In the afternoon, isolated thunderstorms may occur. Winds will blow from northerly directions at 3 to 5 Beaufort, locally up to 6 on the seas, and only in the southeastern Aegean from the afternoon, southeasterly at 4 to 6 Beaufort.

Temperatures will slightly decrease, remaining high for the season mainly in the south. They will reach 20-22°C in the north, 24-26°C in other areas, and locally 28-29°C in Crete.

Macedonia, Thrace:

Weather: Partly increased clouds with local showers and scattered thunderstorms. Possibly intense in the eastern parts until noon.
Winds: Northerly to northeastern at 3-5 Beaufort, locally up to 6 in the east during midday.
Temperatures: From 13 to 22-23°C, in Thrace up to 20°C.

Ionian Islands, Epirus, Western Central Greece, Western Peloponnese:

Weather: Initially clear. During midday and afternoon, clouds will develop, especially in mountainous areas with possible showers or isolated thunderstorms.
Winds: Northwest at 4-6 Beaufort.
Temperatures: From 15 to 26-27°C; inland Epirus 3-4°C lower.

Eastern Central Greece, Euboea, Eastern Peloponnese:

Weather: Initially clear. Clouds will develop in the midday and afternoon, with local showers or isolated thunderstorms.
Winds: From north at 3-5, increasing to 5-6 Beaufort in the east in the afternoon.
Temperatures: From 14 to 26°C.

Cyclades, Crete:

Weather: Sparse clouds, temporarily denser. A few local showers are expected in Crete in the morning.
Winds: From north at 4-5, Cyclades up to 6 Beaufort.
Temperatures: From 17 to 23°C, locally in Crete up to 28-29°C.

Eastern Aegean Islands – Dodecanese:

Weather: Initially increased clouds with a small chance of some local showers, mainly in the Dodecanese. Clearing from midday onward.
Winds: From north at 4-6 Beaufort, in the Dodecanese until midday southeasterly at the same strength.
Temperatures: From 18 to 26°C, in the northern areas 15-22°C.

Thessaly:

Weather: Few clouds that will quickly increase with local showers and, mainly in the afternoon, short-lived thunderstorms.
Winds: From north to northeast at 3-4 Beaufort, up to 5 in Sporades.
Temperatures: From 14 to 25°C.

Attica:

Weather: Initially clear. Clouds will develop around midday and afternoon with local showers and possibly isolated thunderstorms in the north.
Winds: From north to northeast at 3-4 Beaufort, in the east up to 5.
Temperatures: From 15 to 26°C, in the east 2-3°C lower at maximum.
