The story of a pre-announced breakup…
After three years, Matias Almeida, despite having signed a five-year renewal with AEK in the summer of 2023, is no longer with the yellow and black team, paying the price for this season’s disastrous results.
“El Pelado” secured a double in his first season in Greece (2022-2023), but last year (when he lost the championship on the final matchday) and this year (finishing 4th in the playoffs despite starting from second place) he remained without titles. He also faced a setback with the shocking elimination by Noa from the Conference League qualifiers.
The Argentine coach essentially bid farewell to the players in the locker room at Toumba after the defeat to PAOK, later revealing his meeting with Marios Iliopoulos on Monday, May 12, where their intention to part ways was confirmed, with only the details remaining to be sorted out.
Today, this was finalized, leading to the official announcement which states:
“AEK FC announces the termination of its cooperation with the current head coach, Matias Almeida.
Matias Almeida took over as head coach of our team from the 2022-2023 season until today. He led AEK to the historic double in 2023, with the club returning to its new stadium.
The AEK family and the club’s administrative leader Mr. Marios Iliopoulos thank Matias Almeida and his staff for their contributions to our team. We wish them continued success in their careers.”
