The Greek shipping remains one of the most dynamic and globally competitive pillars of the national economy, with its fleet of more than 5,800 ships, as the Minister of Shipping and Insular Policy Vassilis Kikilias recently underlined while visiting the Elefsina shipyards. This impressive size is not only a proof of Greece’s maritime excellence, but mainly a tool for strategic negotiation at the international level.

“A number that gives our country enormous negotiating power,” the minister stressed, noting that every interlocutor – be it states or international organizations – recognizes the weight of the Greek flag. This influence is not only limited to international maritime corridors, but also extends to negotiations within the European Union, as well as in multilateral maritime forums.

The minister’s reference was not only limited to the fleet, but also extended to the future of the Greek shipbuilding industry.
