The mural with the dolphins at the Palace of Knossos collapsed due to strong winds – See photos

It is a replica from 1960 of the original depiction from the restoration carried out by Arthur Evans. The original is housed in the Heraklion Archaeological Museum

Newsroom May 16 08:52

The mural with the dolphins at the Palace of Knossos has collapsed due to strong winds in Crete, leading to the failure of part of the wall painting.

This section of the mural, which is a replica of the restoration by Arthur Evans dating back to 1960, was made of plaster. According to initial estimates, two parts of it have detached and fallen, resulting in serious damage and breakage.

The collapse occurred in the eastern wing of the palace, which has already been cordoned off and will remain closed until further notice for safety reasons and an assessment of the damage.

According to information from neakriti.gr, the Ministry of Culture has already been informed of the incident. Authorities have requested immediate restoration of the site to protect the remaining monument and prevent further damage.
