A tragedy unfolded in Rhodes in the early hours of Wednesday, when a 51-year-old Swedish tourist died after falling from the fourth floor of a hotel on Orfanidou Street, suffering instant death.
According to reports, the man, born in 1973, was intoxicated and had a heated argument with his wife and mother-in-law, who were vacationing with him on the island. Shortly after the argument, he went out onto the room’s balcony where—according to eyewitnesses—he hung from the railing with one hand, possibly in an attempt to provoke or defuse the tension.
It appears he tried to climb back onto the balcony, but lost his balance and fell, crashing to the ground and sustaining fatal injuries.
An ambulance arrived at the scene immediately, but it was already too late. He was pronounced dead on the spot.
An investigation into the circumstances of the incident is being conducted by the Rhodes Police Department. So far, foul play and suicide have both been ruled out.
The incident has caused shock among both the hotel guests and the local tourism community, which is currently in full swing for the season.
