The municipal communities of Serres, Lefkonas, and Christos declared in a state of emergency after uranium found in the water

The decision was made following a request by the mayor of Serres, Varvara Mitliagka, and will be in effect for one month from the date of issuance, i.e., until June 26, 2025

The municipal communities of Serres, Lefkonas, and Christos have been declared in a state of emergency by decision of the General Secretary of Civil Protection, Nikolaos Papaefstathiou, in order to address the problems and manage the consequences arising from the detection of elevated levels of uranium in the water.

The decision was made following a request by the mayor of Serres, Varvara Mitliagka, and will remain in effect for one month from the date of issuance, i.e., until June 26, 2025.

The proposal of New Democracy for constitutional revision was submitted to Parliament on the afternoon of Tuesday

This decision enables the Municipality of Serres and the competent authorities to activate emergency resources and financial tools aimed at supporting affected citizens and businesses, as well as accelerating the procedures for the immediate and permanent resolution of the issue.

In a written statement, Mayor of Serres Varvara Mitliagka said:

“The safety and health of our citizens are the highest priority for our municipal administration. Declaring the above areas in a State of Emergency for Civil Protection is an important step that will allow us to act immediately and effectively, utilizing all available means to address the water quality issue.

I thank the General Secretary of Civil Protection for his prompt response and assure all our fellow citizens that we will do whatever is necessary to protect public health and restore normalcy as soon as possible
.”
