In Greece, it was originally established as a holiday only for public sector employees, since the Holy Spirit is considered their patron. The feast of the Holy Spirit is an official public holiday for the public sector and banks, while retail stores remain open and operate normally. Supermarkets, bakeries, and grocery stores also operate as usual.

Holy Spirit Monday: Pay Provisions for Those Who Work
For employees in sectors where the day is considered a holiday but they are required to work, the law provides for additional pay. Specifically:
- Salaried employees who work are entitled to a bonus on top of their monthly wage.
- Those not working due to the holiday suffer no wage deduction.
- Daily wage workers receive their full daily wage, whether they work or not.
If a company, despite having declared the day a holiday, decides to operate, the following applies:
- Full-time employees are entitled to an additional payment equal to 1/25 of their monthly salary.
- Daily wage workers receive an additional daily wage.
- In all cases, there is a 75% surcharge on the hourly wage for work on a public holiday.
