EU Foreign Ministers: diplomacy is the only way to stabilise the situation in the Middle East

Respect for international law and restraint were urged by EU leaders during an emergency videoconference — The EU will not be lenient regarding Iran’s accelerated nuclear program

Newsroom June 17 06:30

The situation in the Middle East was the central focus of an emergency videoconference held by the European Union’s foreign ministers.

“The ministers called on all parties to adhere to international law and to exercise restraint,” emphasized the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, during the press conference following the meeting. She added that diplomacy is the only path to stabilizing the region and stressed the importance of avoiding actions “that could spiral out of control.”

“We all agreed on the urgent need to avoid escalation,” she noted.

On Iran’s Nuclear Program

Kallas also addressed Iran’s nuclear program, outlining the EU’s firm stance:

“We cannot be lenient when Iran is accelerating its nuclear program,” she stated.

She reiterated the EU’s position that “Iran must not acquire a nuclear bomb, and diplomacy is the solution to prevent that — the EU will play its role.”

She mentioned a recent telephone conversation with her Iranian counterpart, during which they both acknowledged the importance of a diplomatic resolution and the role Europe can play in facilitating it.

When asked about possible U.S. involvement, Kallas said she had spoken with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who made it clear that “it is not in the United States’ interest to get dragged into this conflict.”

EU’s Support Role and Concrete Measures

The ministers agreed on supporting Kallas’ role in de-escalation efforts and reaffirmed that a diplomatic solution is the best long-term approach for dealing with Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

“Last week, the International Atomic Energy Agency stated that Iran is violating its non-proliferation commitments,” Kallas added.

The ministers also discussed specific actions the EU is taking in response to the crisis, including:

Focus on Gaza and Ukraine

Kallas emphasized that “we will not let our attention drift away from Gaza.”

She also referenced Russia’s latest attacks on Kyiv:

“Yesterday, Russia carried out one of its most devastating airstrikes on Kyiv. Russia remains relentless in its assaults, targeting civilians and prolonging the war,” she concluded.
