Campaign “zero tolerance in the non-use of helmets” by the ELAS – Intensive checks throughout the country

Despite intensive checks, the number of deaths and serious injuries from road accidents remains high, with non-use of helmets being a key factor in exacerbating the consequences

Newsroom July 1 10:41

A “Zero tolerance campaign for the non-use of helmet” is being launched today by the Traffic Services of the Hellenic Police (ELAS) throughout the country, aiming at the gradual and universal compliance of users of two-wheelers and E.P.E.O. (Light Personal Electric Vehicle).

As noted in the relevant announcement, the intensification of controls throughout the country is part of a targeted planning of the Police Directorate of the Headquarters of the Hellenic Police that covers all riders of mopeds, motorcycles, tricycles and rental vehicles without canopies, as well as professional distributors.

In particular, in accordance with the main lines of action, the following will be carried out:

* Systematic checks for compliance with the obligation to wear helmets, for drivers and passengers, by all Traffic Police Services, Police Departments and O.E.P.T.A., based on the Traffic Police Operational Plan Guideline,

* Special inspections of two-wheeler rental companies and employers in the delivery sector, for compliance with their obligations, in accordance with the applicable labour and administrative legislation,

* Strict enforcement of the prescribed penalties and

* Cooperation and development of joint actions with relevant bodies, in order to strengthen traffic education and collective responsibility.

The ELAS notes that, despite intensive controls, the number of dead and seriously injured from road accidents remains high, with non-use of helmets being a decisive factor in worsening the consequences.

At the same time, the statement stresses that “with the adoption of the new Road Traffic Code (Law 5209/2025), the State gives a clear message of zero tolerance towards the non-use of helmets, recognizing the need for a stricter, fairer and more effective framework, capable of responding to the current dangers of traffic in urban and semi-urban networks. The Hellenic Police is actively responding to this new institutional and social imperative. Firmly committed to the protection of human life, it will be on the roads every day, with a strong presence and consistency, in order to ensure the universal application of the mandatory use of helmets.”

Finally, the statement concludes by stressing that “wearing a protective helmet is not just an obligation; it is an act of personal responsibility and collective maturity. It is the simplest, most accessible and – often – decisive act that saves lives.”
