Municipalities play a leading role in the digital empowerment of the elderly, says Vassilis Spanakis

The Deputy Minister of Interior, responsible for Local Government, co-signed the Joint Ministerial Decision for the programme "Digital Empowerment of the Elderly and Persons with Disabilities"

Newsroom July 3 12:30

The Common Ministerial Decision for the implementation of the pilot programme of the Ministry of Social Cohesion and Family “Digital Empowerment of Elderly People and Persons with Disabilities” was signed.

The program aims to familiarize our beneficiary citizens over 65 years old and those with disabilities and to train them in new technologies, mainly in terms of communication and skills through the internet and social media, such as the use of digital applications of gov.gr, making electronic payments, the use of social media.

In the part of the programme dealing with digital education and empowerment of older people, the first-tier local authorities play a leading role. Municipalities are designated as Beneficiary Entities, which can submit Applications for the operation of Digital Empowerment Hubs for the Elderly, in cooperation with the National Network of Infrastructures for Technology and Research (NINET).

In their application, they shall indicate the proposed social structure or structures for the elderly in which they intend to operate the Digital Empowerment Hubs for the Elderly.

The Deputy Minister of Interior, Vassilis Spanakis on the occasion of the signing of the Joint Ministerial Decision said: “I call on the municipalities throughout the country, which meet the requirements, to join this programme and allow our elderly citizens to be present and aware of the new possibilities offered by our digital era. We must turn the challenges and adversities of the new era into opportunities for all citizens, regardless of age or other characteristics. From 2019 to date, we have covered a large part of the lost ground of the past decades, and now we need to run faster in many areas, with social sensitivity and with a focus on faster and better quality service for citizens.”
