Heatwave Grips Greece: Temperatures Nearing 40°C and Rising

High temperatures dominated much of Greece on Friday, July 4, 2025, especially in the western and southern regions. In several areas, the mercury climbed to 38–39°C.

According to data from the National Observatory of Athens (meteo.gr), 18 weather stations recorded maximum temperatures above 37°C.

Emergency Weather Bulletin Issued

The National Weather Service has issued an emergency bulletin warning of extreme heat lasting four days, from Sunday, July 6, to Wednesday, July 9.

  • The heat will intensify starting Saturday in the west and Macedonia, spreading across the country by Sunday.
  • Temperatures will peak from Monday, July 7, reaching over 40°C in parts of mainland Greece, especially in the west, central, and northern regions.

Key Points:

  • In coastal areas, temperatures will be 2–4°C lower than in inland regions.
  • Relative humidity will remain low, between 20% and 30% during midday in central mainland areas.
  • Nighttime temperatures in urban centres will remain high, hovering between 26–28°C on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

Sunday, July 6:

  • Macedonia, Thessaly, Epirus, and western Central Greece: 38–39°C, possibly 40°C in some locations.
  • Eastern Central Greece and the Peloponnese: 37–39°C.
  • Ionian Islands: 35–36°C.

Monday, July 7:

  • Mainland Greece: 39–41°C.
  • Ionian Islands, Eastern Aegean, and Dodecanese: 36–38°C.

Tuesday, July 8 & Wednesday, July 9:

  • Slight cooling in the west and Ionian.
  • Slight rise (1–2°C) in the east and Aegean.
  • Inland mainland areas may experience 41–42°C.

  • Weather: Mostly clear. Some local cloud development over the northern highlands by midday, with a chance of isolated showers.
  • Winds:
    • West: Light, variable; occasional NW breezes (3–4 Beaufort) in the afternoon.
    • East: Northerly winds (4–6 Beaufort).
  • Temperatures:
    • Mainland: 36–38°C, locally 39°C in the north.
    • Ionian & Dodecanese: 35–36°C.
    • Cyclades: Up to 29°C.

  • Winds: Variable 3–4 Beaufort; easterly breezes later in the day (4–5 Beaufort).
  • Temps: 22–37°C, up to 39°C in central Macedonia. Slightly cooler in the west.

Ionian Islands, Epirus, Western Central Greece & Peloponnese:

  • Weather: Mostly sunny. Some clouds over Epirus may bring brief showers.
  • Winds: Variable, light. Some coastal NW winds (3–4 Beaufort).
  • Temps: 23–38°C inland.

Eastern Central Greece, Euboea, Eastern Peloponnese:

  • Winds: North/northeast (3–5, up to 6 Beaufort in the east).
  • Temps: 24–37°C.

Cyclades & Crete:

  • Winds: Northerly (4–6 Beaufort).
  • Temps: 23–29°C, up to 31°C in Crete, 33–34°C in the south.

Eastern Aegean Islands & Dodecanese:

  • Winds: Northerly (4–5 Beaufort).
  • Temps: 23–36°C.
