Thirteen of the fourteen customs officers who were arrested in Mavrommati, Thesprotia, have been remanded in custody. They are accused of forming a criminal organization in the form of a gang, as well as of repeated, professional, and joint passive bribery.
The officers’ testimonies before the prosecutor and the investigating judge began on Sunday morning and the process lasted nearly twenty hours, with the decision being announced in the early hours of Monday.
Their transfer to correctional facilities across the country is expected to take place within the day.
The customs officers were arrested following a surprise operation by the Internal Affairs unit, after being under surveillance for over two months. The recorded conversations reportedly sparked outrage due to the tone and manner of those involved.
The case file includes a large number of recorded conversations as well as video footage.
Based on all the evidence, the prosecutor and the investigating judge decided to remand 13 of the officers in custody, while only one female customs officer was released under restrictive conditions.
