Crete is under intense pressure due to the arrival of illegal immigrants from Libya who are being rescued by the Coast Guard.

Indicative of the situation is the fact that nearly half of the 840 who arrived on the island within a few hours on Sunday had no place to be accommodated.

According to neakriti.gr, 442 illegal migrants boarded buses from Agia Galini bound for Chania, with the intention of housing them in a facility in Agyia.

However, shortly before reaching their destination, specifically near Stavros, an order was given for them to return to Rethymno.

Reports indicate that the facility in Agyia cannot accommodate all 442 migrants, as hundreds of others are already being housed there. This led to the decision to redirect them.

Ultimately, the hundreds of people were taken to the commercial port of Rethymno, following a decision by port authorities due to the lack of suitable accommodation facilities.

Despite the high temperatures and the absence of infrastructure, the migrants will remain there temporarily until further notice, with officials providing them with basic necessities.
