Emergency protective measures by the Municipality of Athens due to high temperatures

What provisions have been made for the homeless – Care for stray animals

Newsroom July 8 07:40

All services of the Municipality of Athens have been placed on high alert due to the extremely high temperatures expected. Taking into account the measures outlined for emergency conditions—such as the alert status in place tomorrow, Wednesday 8/7, in Attica (Risk Category 5)—the Lycabettus Hill will remain closed to all activity until further notice.

The traffic ban on the hill will take effect tonight at midnight.

As long as the high temperatures persist, 7 Friendship Clubs, one in each Municipal District, will remain open from 09:00 to 21:00, functioning as air-conditioned protection spaces.

Specifically:

  • Agios Pavlos: Mamouri & Dymis – 210 8223946
  • “The Ascension of the Lord” – Neos Kosmos: Heldreich 15 – 210 9240403
  • Votanikos: Kozanis 4 – 210 3423716
  • Kolokynthou: Aimonos 9 & Astros – 210 5140877
  • Agios Eleftherios: Acharnon 372 – 210 2012334
  • Kypseli: Skyrou & Kafkasou – 210 8815877
  • Ampelokipoi: Panormou & Vatheos – 210 6459890

Civil Protection Plan Measures:

  • Standby patrol units from the Cleaning and Greenery Departments will conduct 24-hour patrols.
  • The Municipal Police will monitor high-risk areas by land and air, using drones.
  • Thermal cameras will monitor temperature changes in large green spaces in real time.
  • Water tankers from the municipality will be on constant alert.
  • The Municipal Police Operations Center operates on a 24-hour basis.

Care for the Homeless
To protect homeless individuals from the high heat, the Streetwork teams of the Reception and Solidarity Center of the Municipality of Athens (K.Y.A.D.A.) will be active from 08:00 to 23:00. Social workers, nurses, and psychologists will operate on the streets, offering bottles of cool water, drinks, snacks, and a protection kit with basic necessities.

Especially during heatwave days, K.Y.A.D.A. will supply the Friendship Clubs, the Multipurpose Homeless Center, and the Day Center with water, drinks, and the special protection kit.
