Agreement on the Saint Catherine’s Monastery announced by the Egyptian Foreign Minister during his statements with Gerapetritis

The Greek Foreign Minister said that the Athens-Cairo agreement on the delimitation of the EEZ remains exemplary

Newsroom August 6 04:17

An agreement between Egypt and Saint Catherine’s Monastery was announced by Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty during joint statements with Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis, following their official meeting.

The Egyptian official dismissed recent reports, calling them “malicious and baseless rumors.” He emphasized that no one can touch the Monastery, which will continue to play its pivotal role.

On his part, Mr. Gerapetritis recalled that in May 2025, a joint declaration was signed establishing a strategic partnership between the two neighboring countries. This relationship, he said, reflects the strong historical ties between the two peoples and the enduring legacy of their ancient civilizations, while also clearly demonstrating the current level of cooperation, which has reached its highest point, founded on international law and mutual understanding, especially in the face of complex geopolitical issues.

“Greece and Egypt remain pillars of stability, having developed an exemplary and multifaceted relationship in a fluid international environment, particularly in the sensitive region of the Eastern Mediterranean, which is facing intensifying crises and complex challenges,” said Gerapetritis.

He also reaffirmed that the agreement on the delimitation of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) between Greece and Egypt, signed five years ago, remains exemplary.

Regarding the Gaza crisis, Gerapetritis said the top priorities are:

  • achieving a ceasefire,
  • ensuring mass humanitarian aid reaches civilians, and
  • the unconditional release of hostages.

He concluded by stating that “Greece remains a steadfast supporter of Egypt.”
