Only a few days remain for those who wish to issue the Personal Number themselves, which will henceforth accompany them in all transactions with the public sector, and later also with the private sector. According to announcements, starting Friday, September 5, the first day of operation of the digital key, all those who have not taken action to issue a Personal Number will automatically receive one from the system, ensuring that all Greek citizens are holders of this unique identification number. This number, which will gradually replace the multiple numbers currently in use—such as the Social Security Number (AMKA), the Tax Identification Number (AFM), and the ID card number—will from early September be automatically assigned to all those who did not take steps to issue it.

The Personal Number, which constitutes a new digital identity for Greek citizens, is being gradually introduced as a core identifier in the digital world, though it does not immediately abolish AMKA or AFM. This new number is already printed on the new ID cards, both on their reverse side and in the digital ID through the gov.gr wallet app, demonstrating its role as the unique and primary identifier of each citizen online and in electronic transactions with the public sector, and soon, with the private sector.

The Personal Number will initially apply mainly to transactions with the public sector; however, its expansion to private-sector entities, such as banks and insurance companies, is considered certain, aiming to reduce the need for multiple identification numbers and simplify procedures.

Its issuance takes place through the gov.gr myInfo digital platform, where citizens can actively participate in shaping it by choosing two of the three alphanumeric characters that precede their AFM. The third character is automatically generated by the system, functioning as a check digit. The Personal Number consists of 12 digits, structured as three alphanumeric characters, the AFM, and the check digit. Specifically, two of the three alphanumeric characters are chosen by the citizen, while the third is generated by the system, ensuring reliability and uniqueness.

The Personal Number is permanent and unchangeable, meaning it never changes regardless of modifications to identity documents, address, or other registries. For example, even if a citizen changes their name or residence, the Personal Number assigned to them remains constant throughout their lifetime, offering a reliable and enduring form of identification. The issuance process is carried out through the myInfo app, requiring login with Taxisnet credentials and a registered mobile phone number in the National Communication Registry (EMEp), ensuring secure access and protection of personal data.

The process is simple and transparent. After logging in via Taxisnet, citizens undergo two-factor authentication via OTP, allowing them to review and confirm their data in government registries. If inaccuracies are found, they can submit a correction request either directly through myInfo or at Citizen Service Centers (KEP) and other relevant services. Then, registry synchronization takes place automatically, and the Personal Number is issued, remaining constant throughout the citizen’s life.

Additionally, the platform allows citizens to submit correction requests in case of errors, ensuring accuracy and updates of public registries. Corrections may be requested via the myInfo app or in person at KEP offices, public services, or consular authorities abroad. This process prevents duplicate or erroneous identifications and enhances the efficiency and reliability of the state’s personal data management system.

For specific groups of citizens, special issuance procedures are provided. For example, minors will obtain the number via their parent or guardian, either through myInfo or at KEP. Citizens without Taxisnet access or a mobile phone, as well as legal guardians, may acquire the Personal Number in person at a post office or consular office, submitting the necessary documents for verification.

It should be noted that starting Sunday, June 29, 2025, the issuance of an ID card requires the applicant—if eligible—to have a Personal Number. According to the Hellenic Police, exceptions apply only to cases where citizens have already taken the necessary steps to obtain a Personal Number but the process was not completed through no fault of their own.
