Weather: Winds strengthen from today, “orange” alert in 7 regions

This new week will unfold with mild weather, except in the middle of it, when winds in the Aegean will temporarily strengthen, while by the end of the week, temperatures will rise significantly, bringing heat.

According to meteorological forecasts, starting Thursday, temperatures are expected to reach 37°C. The northerly winds will remain at 6–7 Beaufort, possibly strengthening slightly on Thursday, but without exceeding 8 Beaufort.

“Orange” Alert in 7 Regions

According to the Fire Risk Forecast Map issued by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection of the Ministry of Climate Crisis & Civil Protection (civilprotection.gov.gr), for Monday, August 25, 2025, a very high fire risk (risk category 4) is forecast for the following areas:

  • Crete
  • Karpathos
  • Kasos
  • Chios
  • Psara
  • Samos
  • Ikaria

A high fire risk (category 3) applies to several other mainland and island regions.

The General Secretariat has informed all relevant state services, regional and municipal authorities of the above areas to remain on high alert in order to respond immediately to potential fire incidents.

Highest Temperatures Yesterday in the South

On Sunday, August 24, relatively high temperatures were recorded in the southern part of the country, with the maximum temperature reaching 35.7°C in Lindos.

According to the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr, temperatures will gradually drop and by August 27 will be back to normal seasonal levels.

A weather map shows the distribution of maximum temperatures across the country and the eight stations with the highest values.

  • General: Mostly clear skies. By midday and afternoon, clouds will develop over the mainland with local showers in mountainous areas.
  • Temperatures:
    • Western Macedonia: 13–28°C
    • Rest of Macedonia & Thrace: 18–32°C
    • Thessaly & Central Greece: 18–33°C
    • Epirus: 15–31°C
    • Peloponnese: 18–34°C
    • Ionian Islands: 20–32°C
    • North & East Aegean Islands: 21–33°C
    • Cyclades: 21–31°C
    • Rhodes: 25–33°C
    • Crete: 20–33°C
  • Winds: Northwest 3–5 Beaufort, in the East & Southeast Aegean 4–6 Beaufort.
  • Athens: Sunny, winds N-NE 2–4 Beaufort, temperatures 20–33°C.
  • Thessaloniki: Clear with some local clouds, winds NW turning SE 2–4 Beaufort, temperatures 18–30°C.

Forecast for Tuesday, August 26

  • Ionian & Mainland: Light clouds, thickening by midday with showers or isolated storms in mountainous areas. Clear skies in island regions.
  • Winds: North, 3–5 Beaufort west, 4–6 Beaufort east, up to 7 Beaufort in the Aegean.
  • Temperatures: Seasonal, 29–33°C in mainland, Crete, Dodecanese, and East Aegean; 29–31°C in Ionian Islands; up to 29°C elsewhere.

Forecast for Wednesday, August 27

  • Mostly sunny, with some local morning clouds in southern seas and afternoon showers possible in mainland mountains.
  • Winds: North, 3–5 Beaufort west, 4–6 Beaufort east, up to 7 Beaufort in the Aegean.
  • Temperatures: No significant change.

Forecast for Thursday 28/8 and Friday 29/8

  • Generally sunny.
  • Winds: North, 3–4 Beaufort west, 4–6 Beaufort east, up to 7 Beaufort in the Aegean.
  • Temperatures: Slight rise.
