Andreas Loverdos has joined New Democracy

According to reports, former minister Andreas Loverdos along with members of the party “Democrats” founded by the former minister in March 2024, has joined New Democracy.

According to early reports, Mr. Loverdos will likely be a candidate on New Democracy’s ballot in the Southern Sector of Athens B.

Earlier today, the Prime Minister and President of New Democracy, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, met at the Maximos Mansion with Andreas Loverdos and members of the “Democrats” party (Maria Milini, Tatiana Douvara, Panagiotis Konsolas, Giannis Vouros), welcoming them to ND.

“We welcome Professor Andreas Loverdos and members of the Democrats to New Democracy. He needs no introduction, as he already has a long career in politics. Meanwhile, our party has proven that it keeps its doors open to every force that believes in a strong, modern, democratic, and European Greece,” Mr. Mitsotakis said in his statement after the meeting.

“Far from labels and dogmas, we unite our efforts for a better life for citizens and a better future for the country, especially in an international context of uncertainty that demands unity, cooperation, and internal political stability. Andreas, best of luck and strength,” the Prime Minister concluded.

Andreas Loverdos stated, “With Kyriakos Mitsotakis and New Democracy, patriotically, reformatively, and liberally.”

It is noted that Ms. Milini is Andreas Loverdos’ closest collaborator, Ms. Douvara is the spokesperson of the “Democrats” party, Mr. Konsolas is a long-time associate of the former minister, and Giannis Vouros is the popular actor who has served as mayor of Nea Filadelfeia.

Who is Andreas Loverdos

Andreas Loverdos was first elected as a Member of Parliament with PASOK in 2000, and was re-elected in 2004, 2007, 2009, 2012, 2015, and 2019.

His first portfolio was as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, after which he held positions as Minister of Labor, Minister of Health, and Minister of Education.

In March 2024, he founded the party “Democrats,” with which he participated in the European elections that same year.

Andreas Loverdos was born in Patras in 1956. He is an Associate Professor of Constitutional Law at Panteion University, where he was a Special Postgraduate Fellow from 1984–86, a Lecturer from 1987–92, and an Assistant Professor of Constitutional Law from 1992–95.

He is a lawyer admitted to the Supreme Court (specializing in Public Law) and a member of the Athens Bar Association.
